In recent years, particular attention has been paid to nursing studentsââ?¬â?¢ therapeutic communication (TC) with patients, due to a\nstrong emphasis on patient-centered education in the Iranian healthcare reform. However, various studies have highlighted the poor\ncommunication of future nurses. Therefore, researchers have used qualitativemethodology to shed light on the antecedents and consequences\nof nursing studentsââ?¬â?¢ TC and promote it.We carried out a conventional content analysis using semistructured interviews\nwith a purposefully selected sample of 18 participants, including nursing instructors, students, and patients in hospitals affiliated to\nTehranUniversity ofMedical Sciences. ââ?¬Å?Communication readiness,ââ?¬Â ââ?¬Å?predisposing factors,ââ?¬Â and ââ?¬Å?continuity of careââ?¬Âwere identified\nas the three major themes. ââ?¬Å?Communication readinessââ?¬Â consisted of ââ?¬Å?physical readiness,ââ?¬Â ââ?¬Å?academic readiness,ââ?¬Â and ââ?¬Å?developmental\nreadiness.ââ?¬Â ââ?¬Å?Predisposing factorsââ?¬Â included ââ?¬Å?contextual factorsââ?¬Â and ââ?¬Å?educational condition.ââ?¬Â ââ?¬Å?Continuity of careââ?¬Â included ââ?¬Å?patient\nsatisfactionââ?¬Â and ââ?¬Å?improving nursing studentââ?¬â?¢s motivation to communicate with patients.ââ?¬Â ââ?¬Å?Communication readinessââ?¬Â and\nââ?¬Å?predisposing factorsââ?¬Â constitute the antecedents of nursing studentââ?¬â?¢s TC with patients, and ââ?¬Å?continuity of careââ?¬Â is considered as its\nconsequence. More attention needs to be paid by the regulators to TC instruction in both theoretical and clinical educational curriculum.\nFurthermore, all nursesmust be informed about the importance of TC in promoting patient outcomes and quality of care....
Learning practical nursing skills is an important part of the baccalaureate in nursing. However, many newly qualified nurses lack\npractical skill proficiency required to ensure safe patient care. The invasive skill peripheral vein cannulation (PVC) is particularly\nchallenging to learn and perform. This study explored conditions influencing nursing studentsââ?¬â?¢ learning and performance of the\ntechnical implementation of a PVC during their clinical placement period. A qualitative and descriptive case study design with two\nstudents inNorway practicing PVC during their clinical placement was conducted. One student whomastered the vein cannulation\nwas comparedwith one studentwho did not.Datawere collected in late 2012 usingmultiple data sources: semistructured interviews,\nad hoc conversations, and video recordings. Video recordings of the two studentsââ?¬â?¢ cannula implementations were used to help\nclarify and validate the descriptions and to identify gaps between what students said and what they did.Thematic analysis of the\ntranscribed text data enabled identifying themes that influenced skill performance. There were two overall themes: individual and\ncontextual conditions influencing the technical implementation of a peripheral vein cannula. These findingswere evaluated in terms\nof Bennerââ?¬â?¢s work on scientific and practical knowledge, defined as ââ?¬Å?knowing thatââ?¬Â and ââ?¬Å?knowing how.ââ?¬Â...
Background. A high quality of work life (QWL) is a crucial issue for health care facilities to have qualified, dedicated, and inspired\nemployees. Among different specialties in health care settings, nurses have a major share among other health care providers. So,\nthey should experience a better QWL to deliver high-quality holistic care to those who need help. Objective. To assess the level of\nquality of work life and its predictors among nurses working in Hawassa town public health facilities, South Ethiopia. Methods.\nA facility based cross-sectional study was conducted on 253 nurses of two hospitals and nine health centers. The total sample size\nwas allocated to each facility based on the number of nurses in each facility. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire.\nThe interitem consistency of the scale used to measure QWL had Cronbachs alpha value of 0.86. A multinomial logistic regression\nmodel was fitted to identify significant predictors of quality of work life using SPSS version 20. Results. The study showed that 67.2%\nof the nurses were dissatisfied with the quality of their work life.We found that educational status, monthly income, working unit,\nand work environment were strong predictors of quality of work life among nurses (...
Health behaviour refers to actions undertaken by a person who perceives self to be ill for the purpose of finding an appropriate\nremedy. Nurses as gate keepers of health are expected to seek formal treatment when they are taken ill because this is what they\nteach their patients. Nurses working conditions all over the world are described as squalid with long working hours and workload.\nThis scenario predisposes them to occupational health hazards and at the same time denies them time for self-care. Although nurses\nare knowledgeable about disease and its treatment and have access to health care, they engage in self-treatment in contrast to what\nthey teach patients.Health behaviour among nurses in Kakamega County was investigated using a cross-sectional design. Data was\ncollected using self-administered questionnaires and subjected to bivariate and logistic regression analyses. The study found that\nhealth behaviour of nurses in Kakamega County is below expectation, as 33% (...
Purpose: Nursing documentation is essential in ensuring communication between team members,\ncontinuity of care and evidence based practice. The purpose of this paper is to review and synthesise\nresearch pertaining to nursing documentation in specialist palliative care.\nMethod: An Integrative review (IR) utilising Whittemore and Knafiââ?¬â?¢s five stage process was employed.\nElectronic searches of: Scopus, Medline, Cinahl, Web of Science, Academic Search Complete databases\n(2010-2017) were conducted. 10,842 articles were retrieved which were reduced to five articles for review.\nData extraction, quality assessment (Critical Appraisal Skills Programmes ââ?¬â?? CASP) and thematic analysis\nwere conducted on the included articles.\nResults: Two overarching themes emerged in this review, symptom management and engagement.\nSymptom management focused on documentation of symptoms while engagement highlighted emotional\ncare, information giving, providing support, coordinating care, supporting families and education.\nConclusions: Clear, accurate, and complete documentation is crucial to the delivery of quality health care\nand pivotal to effective communication within the team. Although this is important in all aspects of care it\nis arguably even more so in end of life care. In order to audit the care provided, such care must be clearly\nidentified and documented....
Background. During medication administration process, including preparation, administration, and documentation, there is high\nproportion of work interruption that results in medication administration errors that consequently affect the safety of patients.\nThus, the main purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of work interruption and associated factors during medication\nadministration process. Methods. A prospective, observation-based, cross-sectional study was conducted on 278 nurses. Structure\nobservational sheet was utilized to collect data. EPI Info version 3.5.3 and SPSS version 20 software were utilized for data entry\nand analysis, respectively. Binary and multivariable logistic regression were fitted to identify the associated factors using an odds\nratio and 95% CI. Results. The incidence of work interruption was found to be 1,152 during medication administration process. Of\nthis, 579 (50.3%) were major/severe work interruptions. Unit of work, day of the week, professional experience, perceived severity\nof work interruption, source/initiator of interruption, and secondary tasks were factors significantly associated with major work\ninterruptions at ...
